i was wondering if there was anything i could do to get a better FPS rate out of my computer. i've got a lap top that has: 1.8GHz Celeron CPU, OS is XP Home add w/ service pack 2. i've got 256 MB of ram (dont know what kind), the grafics card is a intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphicss Controller and i've got my moniturs refresh rate at 60hz. thats the only option it gives.
i dont konw how to overclock my CPU or if its possible to overclock the grafics card. in a 24 person server i get about 15-17 average FPS when full. and about 10-12 on anything over that. i dont even try to go into anything over 32 players in it. i know what i need is a new computer but at this time its not an option. i could probibly get some more ram but thats about it. thanks in advanced for any help.

droping game resolution helps so does droping the detail.

I'm thinking that graphics card is an onboard one? Stats on it?

Check up on the RAM. If you are using more than 256MB, that could be a cause of a slow FPS. Its not uncommon to go that high. Look in the task manager and check is periodically.

I've heard that the Celeron is not good for gaming. No experience with it myself though.

If available try this -

60hz is a slow frequency go here - Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/List All Modes

Keep whatever resolution you have but scroll to a higher frequency for example: 1280 x 768, True Color,(32 bit) 75hz. This will give you a better frame rate and hopefully get rid of some of the flicker. What ever resolution you desire just choose the higher frequency.

Adjust your screen to barriers again if it works. Smile

He has a laptop, 60hz is fine on LCD screens.

His video card is the problem. His memory is also a little problem too... That's how fast the game goes with a computer like that, believe me.

hmm i dunno, Ren should be fine at 800*600 on low on those specs, even with an onboard graphics chip.

Are you sure you've got power management setup properly? in Control panel / Power Management, check to see if it's not lowering the CPU speed to save battery (stupidly sometimes it lowers it by default while on mains, too)

In my early days I used to play Renegade with my oold custom built computer that had:

500mhz Celeron (96mhz FSB!!!)

64mb SDRAM

16mb Riva TNT2 Pro

8GB Hard Drive

W00T!!! Yep, 10 FPS it was.

Then later on it got upgraded with a 500mhz Pentium III (Thank god), 512mb SDRAM, and the same video card and hard drive. That got me about 25 FPS in Renegade. lol, 25 FPS seemed to be really fast. Now, with my up-to-date computer, I can score about 70 FPS in Renegade on average and reach 100 FPS sometimes.

There are some software tweaks such as turning off Vertical Sync, and a few others, but they won't get you too far. Believe me, I've tried them ALL.

I'd suggest to upgrade your comp a bit, but its a laptop so upgrades are limited. You could probably get an extra stick of RAM in there. I doubt you could do much more though.

A BIT? LOL.

IRON-FART, upgrades are only limited in size, technically he could nearly replace everything he's got in there with better equipement.

Only issues could be heat, space, and power, I believe.

With those limitations...He can only upgrade a bit, like I said.

Space is the main problem. Things are so packed in on laptops that usually there is little to no space left for upgrades. Sometimes theres room for an extra stick of RAM, but usually nothing more.

And he did want to know what he could do with what he already has.

Just a tip before upgrading:

I think there are some settings with the CPU with at what speed it should be running. (I'm not talking about over clocking here) When The laptop is not directly plugged in to some electricity source, on some systems windows automaticly makes the CPU run slower to spare some energy.

Maybe you should look in your windows settings for any power setting that has to do with this. I'm not experienced with Windows laptops, but this is my guess. Good luck.

It has to do with your refresh rate. If you video card is running at 60hz, your FPS won't get higher. I don't know if you can change the Refresh rate in the game. But to be honest, It doesn't really matter if you go higher then 60.

regardless of previous answers,

this is what i used to do to squeeze more FPS outa my XP1900 and Ti4200:

[1] go to 16bit textures instead of 32. Immediate speed increase low hit to eye candy.

[2] smaller screen resolution (i was at 800x600 for best FPS at the time).

[3] WINDOWED MODE. An absolute must if you are looking for more FPS.

[4] less Skins. More skins = less fps, less skins = more fps.

[5] newest drivers for you gfx card.

there are probably more i forget but all these will give you extra FPS on a poor/average system. Smile

*Buavey: right click on your desktop, go to properties, then the settings tab, the hit advanced. Root around in here until you find an option with the words "VERTICAL SYNC" in it. make sure it is switched to off. Congratulations you just took the frame cap off.*

Those are bad examples.

1. 16-bit greatly effects the eye candy, it looks INCREDIBLY blotchy, and it never even boosted my frame rate any higher than 1.

2. Screen resolution is the only good one I see in here. It may not look as sharp, but it greatly improves FPS.

3. Let me get this straight, WINDOWED MODE DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO YOUR PERFORMANCE. The only difference is that it turns off Vsync, so your FPS goes higher than your refresh rate and you THINK you're getting better performance.

4. Texture replacements barely harm the FPS at all, unless you get huge ones that are big texture maps.

5. This is the first thing almost anyone tries.

One way to improve FPS in ANY game without even noticing any difference in detail is changing your image quality to "quality" instead of "high quality".

First of all, Laptops arent realy made for gaming.
Then the Celeron isnt realy a game processor.
If its a Celeron D with 256 cache, and 533 bus u should be ok.
But it isnt so..
Onboard graphics arent realy for gaming, even thoug i know someone whos still getting over 24 fps with a geforcemx onboard and a GOOD processor.
This game depends on cpu mostly.

16 - bit ore 32 bit definitly counts for a card like this, Unless ure running over a ti 4200 i realy THink swithing to 16 bit matters.

That will solve your problem right there Smile

Find out what the maximum refresh rate for your monitor is first though.

he was looking for suggestions, all of mine boost frame rate, regardless of impact on visuals. So to retort:

[1] in fact does increase your fps, you said so yourself.
[2] screen res is always a factor
[3] windowed mode increases fps on slower systems. Fact.
[4] we are talking about a CPU intensive game. Texture replacements slow the game down because ren draws BOTH textures. Shoddy game engine.
[5] just because its obvious to you does not mean it is to the person that posted.

be careful before you tear through one of my posts regarding increasing fps for Ren,
I had a shit system for a long time and i tweaked it almost exclusively for Ren.
