That's a good point. People that I have talked to, who have gone to pop-concerts expect a sound that's exactly like the CD, with few variations.
I think it has to do with the fact that a pop-artist, at least today's pop-artist, can't get creative with their genre. It's not like they can crank out a ten-minute guitar solo in the middle of a song, or let the bassist and drummer go insane. Hell, because their music is so packaged, they literally have no creative control, because they are often just karaoke-ing their own song.
Disney has been churning out poppy-princesses for a long while, and it's just become more manufactured, and mass-produced. The last 'pop' artist to have any shred of talent was Madonna, because she can at least sing. Even the quote-unquote "punk bands" of today are in on it too, because the attention span of kiddies these days is just so f*cking short.
