I used the look up IP address feature on my forums today because someone posted a few topics that were inappropriate, in a forum of mine that I accidently allowed guest posting on. I just wanted to know when you use the look up IP address thing, what does all this mean?
dialup-4.181.221.96.Dial1.Stamford1.Level3.net

I think it means they are using dialup, then their IP address, and I don't know what is after their IP address. Also is there some sort of a program to find out where someone lives, or relative location, based off of their IP address?

They are using some dialup service from http://www.level3.net

Search on google.com if you want to trace.

In the postbit you should see a little "IP" button. Click that and it should give you the IP address.

The information that site gave me is in accurate, unless soemone else got that IP address after the person who made the topics re dialed and got a new IP or soemthing.

City: Woburn
StateProv: MA
PostalCode: 01888
Country: US

The person who created the topics lives in my town. I know this because they knew my full name which I have never told anyone I have ever met online. Also they knew which High School I go to. I would have liked to know who exactly it was, but I guess I am to late.

I used to know some good ones that would tell you the adress it came from. But I can't find those ones anymore.

I know some services can even get you a map of the area.

Zone Alarm can automatically map, but thats only if it blocks some information of something like a ping from the source.

There is also a program called VisualRoute that you might want to look into.

I got Hot Whois. It will tell you just abotu everything abotu the IP address you look up. Country, State, City, Road, Address, ZIP code ETC

This kind of thing would work a little better on DSL or cable connections...They will never be 100% correct, but should at least get the state right.
