Do u think it is wise for the US to travel once again to the moon? I've heard that president bush might be sending men to the moon and then to mars. Do u think that this is a good idea for the united states? The money that might be spent on going to the moon and/or mars could be used to help iraq, iran, global warming, and ect. I belive it isnt a good idea but It would be nice to see man walk on the moon during my life time.

well, i think we should. there is this conspiracy theory that says we never landed on the moon

lets prove them wrong.

and it would be cool to see mars.

I think if we can actually do something productive up there then yeah it's worth it. But sending a few guys up there to walk around and gather soil samples doesn't quite justify the amount of money it would cost. I think it's just a stunt by Bush to try to get himsef re-elected personally.

A permanent base on the moon would have its advantages, but not as much as having a permanent base on mars. Mars's atmosphere is very different from our, but if you were to remove all the trees from earth our atmospheres would be almost identical, which means that mars can be transformed into an almost "second earth". The idea of terraforming was officially introduced in the lat 1990's and it was theorized that mars or Venus could be successfully transformed into an earth like planet. The moon, with no atmosphere to begin with, more enough gravitational pull to hole and atmosphere to it not much higher then the density of space is out of the question to terraforming or even a permanent living area for normal citizens.
Humans should be almost fully prepared to make a human mars trip in little over 2 years, which is exactly the time earth and mars will be close to each other once again.(Mars Pathfinder missions). Once a permanent establishment that can support itself under any circumstance is set up we will be able to start construction of "terraforming plants", Most likely massive machines that would burn highly polluting materials to create green house gasses to warm the planet. Massive greenhouse forests or genetically altered trees that can withstand some of the toxins in Mars’s air and grow at a much faster rate using more CO2 can be constructed which would in turn release O2 into the atmosphere. As for the other materials required to have breathable air can be extracted from the ground as well as gasses that will break down the harmful substances in the atmosphere. We’re are looking at is a green watery mars in about 400 years.

I say screw the moon. We were there once and from the looks of it there is no reason to really go back, other than maybe to put some kind of equipment there, which could be done via rovers etc.

I would much rather see us go to Mars. At least it could possibly be terraformed into a livable environment.

The moon's dumb...

- BECAUSE -

There's nothing there.

The U.S. should take money from billionaires and fund a huge trip/base/thing to Mars. Now THAT would be worth someone's while.

Also, I think that rumor about the conspiracy that we never went to the moon is total

We never went to the world? WTF? I think you mean moon right? I don't think we should go to the moon since we have already done that, but I do think we should go to Mars and set up a small out post type of a thing where maybe a couple people can live or something, they could start the terraforming process, set up equipment, test the soil for nutrients, test the air on mars for whateve gases are harmful to humans ETC moniter the weather patterns throughout the year ETC ETC ETC and periodically NASA could send them frozen burritos and/or Pizza from Pizza Hut (they went to the space station, why not Mars?) LOL But NASA could send them foods and stuff periodically along with equipment, supplies, ETC to expand the out post or just more equipment for it.

We could get mars atmosphere to aproximately the right conditions, but there's a lot we need to learn about keeping earth fit for human life before we consider ourselfs capable of teraforming another world

first, mars does not have the magnetic field and gravity necessary to hold in an atmosphere. we could build shelters to hold humans but they would never be outside playing ball in the sunlight without protection.
as for the moon, there are many things a moon base could do for us including growing crops, harvesting solar energy, a place for prisoners, observatories etc.
also, keep in mind that everytime we develope technology for space travel it helps us out on earth. so by trying to walk on the moon again or sending people to mars we may just accidentally cure cancer or come up with a viable clean energy source.

as for the guy who said take money from billionaires to go to mars... i hope you're saying accept donations and that you're not another flaming liberal child who thinks they don't deserve to have the money that they and their families worked hard for.

Are you saying it is useless to go to Mars? You are actually wrong Mars has an atmosphere just not breathable to us humans currently. You could also grow crops, harvest solar energy, hold prosoners, and make observatories on Mars as well. The moon has no atmosphere, and can never have one, due to it's small mass it doesn't have a strong enough gravitational field to hold an atmoshpere.

This might be a bit off topic but have u ever wondered if the NASA has ever seen a ufo. There is hundreads of doctumented acounts of ufos during space flights. Also i was reading a artical about a hypotothis that states that in the next few decades scienticets will create a new element to our periodic table with the atomic number of 115. They say this element will have propertys that will be able to disrupt the gravitational pull of objects, also i was watching the sci fi chanel and it said that this guy who said he was one of the scientists who searched the roswell ufo and his research has shown that the space craft was probrably powerd by this element he calls 115 which is coresponding to the element. From the crash he said that the government has a large quantity of this element.

Us giong to the mars is going to take a while, probably a decade or two. Mars is a hell of alot farther to earth than the moon is and even getting there takes months, literally. Food rations, oxygen, supplies, is all limited on spaceships.

As far as technology goes, we have sent things out side of our solar system, i am sure we can make it to Mars.

I think manned space exploration is a waste of money, in the 60s beating the russians justified the moon missions, and probably ended up helping the country, but now, the ($3 billion) space station is breaking down because the shuttles aren't in operation. Also, 2/3 of mars missions have failed, so why send people there if there's a 2 to 1 chance they'll be killed.

Yeah, quite some Mars missions have failed, but a manned mission would have a better chance of succeeding because they can avoid pointy objects and craters and such better. An unmanned mission is basically "we'll let it land there and hope there's nothing in our way that wasn't on the photos".

Furthermore I think space missions are good for scientific purposes and such, but I agree with smwScott that this is just Bush trying to get some votes. Besides, I suppose the US could better not spend even more money while they are running a huge deficit.

you cant prove them wrong...it was long ago, technology has advanced, any country could get there now, going there again wont change what people thought happened back then....

Even with extensive terraforming, would Mars atmosphere have a pressure high enough for humans to breathe unaided? And can the extreme temperature variations be eliminated?

I think the best way to terraform mars is to send algi to grow on the planet. after a few years send robots to burn the algi creating an atmosphear. The best way to give mars a breathable atmospheare is to actualy pulute the planet, ironicaly.

no, i'm not saying it's useless to go to mars...just the opposite. and yes, it has an atmosphere, but it is too thin to sustain life as we know it right now. the atmosphere has leaked out over the years because it does not have the gravitational pull to keep one in. add to that the lack of tetonic plate movement which would help keep an atmosphere in and the planet at a decent temperature. it all means that mars would never be able to sustain human life unless huge shelters were built and water and oxygen we created on a mass scale to keep those in the shelters alive.
our resources should be spent on exploring mars and other planets in our solar system but not in teraforming them. instead we should keep trying to improve our technology so we can travel to other solar systems and find planets which can already support our life.

This is not true, Voyager 1 is the man made object that has travled furthest, and it hasn't made it into deep space just yet. after 26 years of flight, it's thought to be in the Termenation shock region of the solar system, the boundry between our solar system and deep space.
