I was playing ren two days ago when the screen froze and i had to restart the machine. I have win98se on this machine so errors do happen and restarts are some what common.
The PC boots up and the bios runs and as it checks the hard drive I get the message..
CMOS Values Error
and it ask me if I want to load the default values, or to load setup. I can choose neither and the screen is frozen.
I have checked most of the parts by swapping out in to another machine and all of them work fine. I can not check the CPU though. I have seen and replaced mobos before many of them with Bios failer, but I have never seen a burnt out CPU or know what the symptoms are. I am sure that it is the bios that has died but I just wanted to make sure before i order the replacement parts.

Mobo eagle tec 830l -I have heard there were problems with this board-
CPU amd xp1700 - the cpu has been removed and has visible damage. The die has been stained by the thermal putty of the heat sink and i am not sure if it can be cleaned up so the CPU can be reused.

Any help or information would come in handy.

sounds like a BIOS problem. Check the battery in the board. Make sure it hasn't busted open or something (had that happen once). It doesn't sound like a fried processor. Usually, if a processor is fried, you will not get it to POST at all.

To clean off the processor, use 91% alcohol. Not the weak 70% stuff.

If you think its the processor, take it out and clean it off. You should be able to easily tell if its fried.
