sup, just sent pc in to get fixed. Basically got that nvlddmkm error for Nvidia (Display Driver has stopped responding but has recovered) - basically screen goes black every time you try to launch a game and fucks up. Then eventually PC blue screened, and every time I reboot the screen has vertical lines running down it.

So yea, $60 just for them to look at it, $110 labor fee +whatver other shit I need to buy.

I know the graphics card is fucked, tis an old Nvidia 7500 LE.
And teh Power supplys' power button doesn't stay off when you turn the switch off at the back, it just flicks back to on. Anyone know the cause of that?

PSU still works fine, so I'll probably just be up for a new Gcard.

If this is the case, anyone have any suggestions as to what might be a decent card to buy? I dont want to spend anything over $300.

Think PC specs are:

3.2Ghz AMD special editon black CPU (O_o)
Mobo: Lanparty 7900Gx
1GB Ram
Can't remem PSU

soz for the tldr, but yea opinions are valued. Basically I only play ren / might get back into WoW depending how boring life gets.

sorry, I missed that.

First I would at least double your RAM (depending on your OS maybe even 4GB) as DDR2 aint that expensive.

If you want to stick with NV gpu, I am pretty sure that their lower cards (260 gtx) will drop in price a bit with todays launch of the 470/480 (but you may not have the time as you need it to be fixed asap?). There is probably a decent ATI 5xxx but I wouldnt know which one to pick.

IMO it is important to choose a decent brand once you decided on a model. So look for msi, Zotac ... and avoid XFX and similar cheap ones.

PS: your mb is 790 gx instead of 7900 right?

edit: and about your the psu: sounds like physically broken but If its only the switch you could simply use one of those: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HJ982K/ref=sr_1_3/182-5569561-9520203?ie=UT F8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1220538230&sr=8-3%29

Why do you suggest getting 4GB RAM?

Just like to say I have always used XFX GFX cards and I have never had a problem with them. I once forgot to plug the fan back in on my XFX 7900GS and the temp quickly hit 130c (yes C) (which I didnt know at the time) and I ran it like this for several hours.. even though I kept getting FPS drops every 2mins where the GFX turned off because it hit 130c and then back on again and still didnt have any problems, in fact im still using that same card now and its been a good 2-3years now.

Although I read that there is a way to get 4gb ram working with vista 32, I'd do 2gb. You should notice a difference with that.

xfx doesnt build the gpu... just the card and the fan (not literally). and afaik alot of users are complaining about xfx cheap fans

Well, the gtx480 is out... unfortunately its so freaking hot and needs a hell of power, so a lot will choose 5870 instead. hence ati prices wont drop.

On topic;

A GTX260/275 will be more then enough for todays games and it will still be a good card in the years to come. The only time the 260/275 is going to become outdated is when DX11 finally comes mainstream.

Dont get anything lower in the GT/S/X series then the 260 they're extremely cut down versions below this.

I cant say which ATi card to buy because I dont follow there cards. I think the 5870? is a good and cheap-ish card. But dont hold me to that.

Off topic;

XFX hasn't been a problem to me, saying that I haven't had any problems with any NV cards. my (reborn's) G4 Ti4200 is still working to this day and thats a good 8 years old.

If you personally haven't had any problems with XFX then you can't really tell someone that they're crap.

Apparently if you get a SSD drive it is fast enough to add performance to your system as virtual memory.

GTX 260, 275
Ati 4870, 4890, 5770, 5850 (might be out of range)

Also need your PSU model/make to see what it can handle. Need more info about the CPU, ram would be a good addition as was mentioned above.

$300 AUS should net you a good card like nVidia's GTX 260. It's a shame things are quite a bit more expensive that way,

Finding a 4870/4890 from ATI will be tough because those cards are 'End of Life' and have been replaced by the 5xxx Series.

Just from looking at Australian hardware site, the GTX 260's are $250+.

However, you'll want to buy way more memory, and keeping your $300 budget means you'll have to likely lower the amount you can spend on a graphics card. An nVidia GT250 oould fit the bill, and same goes for an ATI 4850, although that card is EOL, too.

It actually is, but you just need to be smart about it. If you can, work barefoot on a tile floor, don't wear a big Canadian wool sweater, and just keep one hand on the case to discharge the static.
