Hmm, let's check if there was such a person:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali. Looks like an honest mistake to me. A lot of people have similar names in that culture, due to their tradition of naming people after people. Hardly suprising.

i've often found it quite hard to reconcile the tradition of muslims naming people Mohammed, but being outraged at an animal being named Mohammed, and being outraged to the point of murder at the slightest criticism of Mohammed.

ljbh, an animal isn't gonna disgrace the name. a human absolutely could... the original mohammed certainly did.

Imam Ali is in reference to the cousin of Muhammed. Shi'ite Muslims take the day of his death as a day of mourning.

I don't see anything wrong with that. People take Christmas holidays off, for example, what's wrong with the commemoration of this holiday? I'm not someone who celebrates this or anything, but why should anyone care?

Anyways, if this turns into another theism/atheism (which I can bet my nickle on) topic I would suggest it be put into Heated Discussions.

true but how many western people are going to know all that? They see a arabic name and the 9/11 date, then they make the most obvious connection.

Yeah I understand how the connection could be made in someone's head, but I think one should at least ask the store owner for clarification, or do a quick google search for "Imam Ali" (which is what I did), before jumping to that conclusion.

Don't Arabs use the lunar calendar also? That means their celebrations are on a different date on our calendar every year.

That'd require some common sense and thought process, which is in short supply these days.

That's proven in the story itself: the person who was trying to spread this said it "made him sick", when he didn't even know what he was talking about.
I do agree the store should have explained it in at least a sentence or two on the sign.

I would have definitely asked the store owner about it "so what's that sign all about?"

Texas is a bible-belt state as well; sure to have a lot of right wing nuts who fit the description in nikki's post.

They need to keep themselves educated. Otherwise they don't have the right to get butthurt.

Eeeeh, while I'm inclined to agree, at the same time, lots of people don't have the time, nor the patience to do so. Frankly, I had no idea who the guy was; I doubt most people in NA would be able to rattle off any Judeo-Christian martyrs besides the 'Jee-man' or feast days, let alone those from another religion.

It's the reaction that's dumb. If this person had just dialed up the storekeeper and said, 'um, can I ask you what the dealio here is?' , then this would've likely been a non-issue.

Sure! Of course, you're absolutely right. All I'm saying is if you don't have the time or effort or whatever to learn about the culture you're bitching about, you don't get to bitch. Before you start developing any feelings whatsoever you need to stop and realize "Holy shit, I have no idea what's going on here, I should shut the fuck up."

Or any other kind of education on the subject, yeah.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:

Death

On the 19th of Ramadan, while Ali was praying in the mosque of Kufa, a Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite, assassinated him with a stroke of his poison-coated sword. Ali, wounded by the poisonous sword, lived for two days before dying in Kufa on the 21st of Ramadan in 661.[93]

To wrap this up, this is what the store sign was referring to.
