I was just curious to know how many people would be interested in having a site similar to renmaps.com? It had a nice search function and was a pretty nice way to download files for renegade. I'm thinking about converting all of http://renegade.dmehosting.com/ to a more organized place like that, and make it easier for other people to upload their stuff.

If you don't want EA to get any credit, destroy their Refinery. Duh.

IronWarrior ( http://www.renegadeforums.com/index.php?t=usrinfo&id=3790&rid=3415 ) already runs a pretty well known awesome site for things like this here: http://www.game-maps.net/

If you're serious about helping then it might be worth contributing to that site instead. It's already well known and used allot. Big Grin

Yeah, except Game-Maps has that irritating installer files instead of the map files themselves.

Sounds like an alright idea, in my opinion it's always good to have 2 maibn sites where people can upload and download from, when one site doesn't have that file the other one might.

Don't see what is wrong with the installers, if you are a dumb ass with computers, then it helps, but if you good with computers, then you shouldn't have a problem, if you have the game installed elsewhere, all you need to do is edit the install path in the field.

If you like me, then your game installation path is like a/b/c/d/renegade/data, saves alot of time. Smile

But I plan on adding a .zip format sometime this year.

Yeah, .zips of some maps would be nice. Though, another hosting site like renmaps would be nice.

On a side note, anyone remember a map called Factory.mix? Atleast, I think that was it. As you can guess, it was a DM set in a factory. Had PT's though.

Just to expand on what I said, I updated the Renegade Skins category with new version of files, also adding alot more each day, when am done, I plan on working on the Renegade maps.

The maps is gonna be alot of work, so I was thinking of recruiting a few new temp staff members to help with it that can follow a simple instructions and tasks, it's not a easy job, it's time comsuming work, but we have lots of guides on how to do it.

Adding a file, takes a number of steps that you gotta do before you can "click add", these are to add a map.

1. Test map online.
2. Take a clear screenshot (remove the whole hud, using a edited bandtest.dll and using hud 0 in console) that shows a good view of the map, no weapon must be in view.
3. Resize screenshot to 600x800.
4. Add watermark.
5. Make a thumbsize image, 125x100 size.
6. Make a installer for the map using winrar.
7. Upload the full size image and thumbsize image to the FTP.
8. Upload the map.
9. Make a new forum topic for the map at mp-gaming.com
10. Add the damn map to the database.

Blah, takes me about 2-3 minutes and now am thinking of adding .zip files, that is gonna increase the workload. Blush

I approve. In my experience, regardless of what you put as the install path, the installer would add extra folders and the maps would ultimately end up in the wrong spot. It would have blah/Renegade/Data as the path, but end up installing in blah/Renegade/Data/Renegade/Data

Hmm, maybe some of the old installers might be like that, I was quite a newbie when I first started to help, but the new versions should work alright.

To be honest, I prefer the non-flash, ftp look of the site. Make things just easier. Although, if you did change it to a GUI, I'd recommend allowing registered users to upload files (like 100mb limit or something), for just renegade related stuff. I'd imagine something like that would become very popular, especially to "moders", etc

With the software I have in mind I'll give certain "groups" an account where they can upload stuff, so I could track it.

With this I can also add mirrors for the downloads so multiple webmasters can volunteer to be mirrors for each files. THis will be a large database of all the files we can think of and also have mirrors for the downloads.

I'm going to need people to help upload files/screenshots/descriptions and anything else you can come up with. If there is anyone that can help, please let me know. I have the script installed and I need to give a few people accounts to help upload stuff. This is to big of a job for one person (me).

I'll need help if people can offer. The script allows mirrors as well for each file. If there are websites that will allow the site to mirror, that will be great.

Excatly. I hate those .exe's and just want the files.

One reason I would support Speedy trying to start up something fresh.

What is it about the installers you don't like?

Keep in mind, that the new ones that I have been doing for the last 6 or so months, do not contain the .txt message pop up anymore and nothing else will pop up after you run it.

And they also should install to the default renegade path and not to anything else.

Feedback is always welcome.

Well I don't use the default Renegade path so that makes matters more difficult.

I also just want the files, an exe is another layer between me and the files. Also downloading exe's can be a little sketchy these days.

I understand how an exe is easier for a novice user but I know how to install a Renegade map so it gets rather in the way.

Ah I see, yeah I have my Renegade in a other folder as well, but if you have winrar installed, you can right click over the .exe file and choose to extract to file or extract here, you don't have to use the installer. Thumbs Up

Installers suck and i personally dont enjoy them, for the reason which runs through my mind is "what else is included with the installer." Rars are ftw. Split rars on free file hosts with time delay are fail.

And Speedy i might be able to help :
