Windows ME Crazy

Don't you think you would be better off using windows 2000? Or even XP...

A bit of advice: Don't try and host a dedicated server from a home PC, almost all home internet connections simply don't have the necessary bandwidth to host a decent server. If you want to host a server pay for professional hosting.

When BRenBot says it cannot find bhs.dll that's just because you have not updated your FDS with the most recent scripts.dll (which includes bhs.dll). It will still WORK, you just won't have some commands available (same goes for all the other bots, they all need you to update your server for them to work 100%)

But then the FDS closes and and shuts down and it closes itself.

Like DP said, don't try hosting a Renegade server from your 1mb connection. And what the hell are you doing with Windows ME?!

Give me ADSL2 internet connection and I'll host a perfectly fine Renegade server....Home connections are starting to become faster and faster. There are many ISP's who are starting to offer internet connections that would be more than enough bandwidth to host a server from your home. Can you host a 127 player server off your home connection? Probably not. But some home connections will allow you to easily host a 32-50 player server.

Anyone notice this is the wrong section? Surprised

@Speedy059: Yea, you're right because my ISP gives us unlimited BW here (either that or a very VERY high bandwidth limit). I've not even been kicked off my internet for reaching a 'limit' so I'm assuming I've got unlimited. But I just don't have bandwidth to spare right now as I'm home hosting a couple other servers ^,^

Wireless router with one laptop connected to it.
Two computers "hard-wired" to my router. (one is linux-based)
A teamspeak server/ircd running off a Linux PC. I used to have a shoutcast server running but it was shit quality( not enough bandwidth Sad )

Ummm...yeah...I'm going to have to sort of, disagree there...

Sure you can get even 20mb downstream connections these days, but for hosting a server, its upstream that counts, and ADSL (even ADSL2), cable modems, etc have really crappy upstream. Your best bet would be SDSL, which by the time you got one with enough bandwidth to host a decent server, you could rent a dedicated cheaper.

ADSL2

optionally extends the capability of basic ADSL in data rates to 12 Mbit/s downstream and 3.5 Mbit/s upstream (with a mandatory capability of ADSL2 transceivers of 8 Mbit/s downstream and 800 Kbit/s upstream). Actual speeds may reduce depending on line quality - usually the most significant factor in line quality is the distance from the DSLAM to the customer's equipment.

LOL 3.5Mbit/s upstream (and thats the optimum..good luck even getting that) just won't cut the mustard.

FYI here is a current graph of the bandwidth usage of n00bsvr01 (Crimsons server):

index.php?t=getfile&id=5686&private=0

I seriously doubt anyones home internet connection could handle that. Not to mention the instabilty of running a 24/7 server at home (power outages, windows updates, hardware failures, opps I tripped over the cable, etc).

You don't want to run a stable server with Windows without having to update every month. Let alone Windows ME. now that's a waste of time right there.

If you want a server that bad surley you can host a server at home but then make sure its based on Win NT or Linux. And don't want to exceed 16 players.

They have a 56k connection, there's no point in even trying.

Wow....I guess I've forgotten how much those Renegade servers consume... Although I guess I could still back my point since I have had 2 T1'2 for a home connection at one point... Even wouldn't be enough...oh well

Is this the same server that is mentioned in http://www.renegadeforums.com/index.php?t=msg&th=27743&start=0&rid=2 ? If so, let's review the server stats:

Server OS: Windows ME
Server Hardware: Unknown, but I'm guessing a Celeron CPU Smile
Server Internet Connection: 56k modem

If so....Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ! Big Grin Big Grin

If not, ah well, good luck with that Smile Big Ups
