1) We are being rained on by space junk on a daily basis. LITERALLY.
2) Most of this satellite will burn up in the atmosphere.
3) The "hazardous materials" that they are referring to are most likely 1) any rocket fuel that is left on board, 2) satellite-battery innards (most space satellites use special NiCds) and/or 3) perhaps some electronics bits that have all the usual suspects (lead, cadmium, ...) in them.
4) This is what normally happens to dead satellites.

Judging by the news, I don't think it is going to burn up.

It is probably made to withstand the heat of re-entry. Government is worried it is going to land in China or Russia.

Yeah, probably...maybe not the whole satellite but sensitive parts of it may have been heavily shielded to withstand pressure and heat.

The only thing I'm worried about is the fishies. If they die, how will I get my sushi? Nervous

Even if a meteor crashes into the water, it could still start some massive title waves, hurricanes or even tsunamis.

Then again from the size of this asteroid, it sounds like most of it would burn up in the atmosphere anyway. There'd still be an impact, but I don't think it would be too threatening.

It's a satellite, not an asteroid.

Its on purpose I bet. Rain the ground with technology that is out-dated, and the country super-powers of the world won't know what the US really has up its sleeve.

The fact isn't if anyone will die or not. The US government is worried about it falling into the hands of the Russians or Chinese.
