if your using Vista you could use the build in one.
XP has a built in firewall aswell, but it doesn't check outgoing.. and les options.

If you don't want to configure ports and such. Then ZoneAlarm might be your thing..

A router.

NAT devices (Network Address Translation) are the best firewalls by far. Although to configure them is quite a task.

Routers don't block outgoing traffic, I wouldn't rely on them alone for security.

My security is very basic, but I have no troubles. I use Windows' firewall and NOD32, and then every once in a while I run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Never, ever any troubles. I keep away from those horrid porn sites and such, though. Listen

routers can and do block outgoing traffic as well, but they are not easy to setup and not really suited for home use. There are plenty of SPI firewall products available that run on your PC, even free ones. Even the one that comes with windows is better than nothing at all.

Yes that's true, some routers can.

NAT can't.

Probably bots. If you're behind a router then you won't see those.
