Do not accept it from the kid that wants to give it to you. That's the ONLY way u can do the right thing without getting accused. You may or may not give someone a hint then that the kid may or may not have the laptop.

Put it in a box and have an adult return it to the school. No questions asked and you can live with a clear conscience that you have done something correct and more honourable than receiving stolen goods.

Should your mate "grass you up" for any reason or for that matter, speaks to someone else and they grass on you. Then it's a knock on the door from the Police and believe me, it WILL happen.

People cannot keep their mouths shut when dealing with items like a laptop, so beware.

Actually just by knowing that your friend stole it, and not turning him in, makes you an accessory. Bullshit you say? I once went to jail for exactly that, and ironically I was 18 and he was 17, so I got put in jail for something he did, that I had nothing to do with, while he didn't get into trouble at all. The system can be fucked up.

OK so some guy steals a laptop theoretically worth $2000, he takes the risk for it and faces punishment if he gets caught - then he just gives it to you? that for one seems a little unlikely but I doubt your friend is going to be too pleased when he finds out you sold the laptop and have loads of new stuff from his theivery. Doesn't seem like this kid is the trustworthy type, perhaps he gave it to you because he thought he would get found out, perhaps he wants someone to blame if that happens?

It looks like Karma is just winding up for a sucker punch to me, get rid of the thing before you get smacked in the face and make sure there is no trail to you - returning it would be the simplest thing.

P.S. Surely pawn shops must take some of your details when you bring things in? if this laptop has a tracking device then it could still lead back to you even if you sell it and there would be zero record of the actual theif.

should of taken it back. or got rid of it. your not stealing from the school. your stealing from the community around it. you are also depreiving your classmates of a more enjoyable education. you may think that the school will just replace it, but they could of had 2. you wouldn't get "done" for turning it in. i went down that road before, it turned the item in but i didn't say who i got it from. the person who gave it me fucked up and promised to never do it again. he kept his word since Smile

You do realize Police keep an eye on what is sold through pawn shops, right? You don't think it will be suspicious for a teenager to try and sell a $2000 laptop, especially if it has been reported stolen?

Your best bet is to turn it in anonymously or return it to the school and tell them who took it.

the FBI loses laptops and computers all the time and never find them. so apparently, not even the FBI has little "tracking devices" for their laptops. Why would you school have one then?

you're being so paranoid about it.

from an economic standpoint, if the laptop is going to give you more use than it will the school, you should keep it.

what you should learn about the world is that pretty much everyone is out to screw you if that will make their own situation better; you might as well focus on keeping your own head above water.
