I am posting from my Wii. My nice new hotrod of a computer is broken. When I press the power button the case lights up and the fans begin to spin. About 3 seconds later it just turns off. Ihave no idea where to start trying to fix it... Any ideas?

Power button gets stuck as ACPI PCs take a four second holding down of the power button as an instruction to turn off?

BIOS/POST tell you anything?

Nope. The motherboard is quiet and the power button is not sticking... Any other ideas? It seems like it would be Psu related to me.

Yeah, it's likely to be PSU stuff, maybe try unplugging some devices (like DVD drives) or removing cards.

unplug anything not really required to get just into bios, and see if that works, if so then its prolly PSU.
If that doesnt work then clear your bios using the specified jumper for that.

Last time I ran into that problem, my motherboard was fried by the power input, and I got a new mobo and PSU. My PSU shorted out. :\

ditto except fujitsu try and claim that it is normal for my CPU to be running at 90 degrees.

No... Sad I need to replace my motherboard and Psu? That's 500$ right there. Is there anyway I can test anything. I'll try unplugging some components... I have no idea what flashing the bios is or how to do it. Man this is awful.

Well, if it fried your motherboard, you'll be able to smell it. DarkDemin and I noticed a burning smell, and when we removed the motherboard, we noticed it was burned on the edge and underside by where the power plugged in.

The thing is, my computer was working fine. It would post and boot like it should. Then the PSU shorted out and burnt the motherboard.

until you replace the psu (assuming it's broken) it will be hard to test your motherboard or cpu.

There was no burning smell. So my motherboard probably isn't broken. I was playing Star Wars Kotor 2 and my little sisters shuffle was charging plugged into one of my Usb ports. She came up and pulled it out of the cradle and the whole comp froze. I restarted, bios came up and it showed no hard drives connected.us Restarted again and it did what it does now. I need my computer back! I'm getting Wiiers thumb from all this point and click typing...

Try reseating things, memory, graphics cards, sound cards, etc. If your USB ports aren't the mobo's ports, try removing them, as they may have shorted out when your sister yanked out the cable. If they are the board's ports, you're probably screwed anyway.

Not everything is as it appears

I had a shitty P4 plastic heat sink clip break on a buddies PC once. It did that exact thing. Would start up but after a few seconds the safety would shut it down. Make sure it is tight.

It's a short somewhere. Check your USB port jumpers. My mom's computer used to shut down every time she'd take out her USB flash drive.

Viva la Resistance!
You can buy these fancy little PSU testers for like $10 at a Radio Snack.......

You simply plug the power supply cables into this piece of equipment and it has colored LED's to tell you if the voltages are proper, etc.

My guess is its either your power supply or possibly your RAM sticks have come loose.
