I just finished downloading the windows vista beta and im not sure if i should install it and risk my system.

Basicly what im asking is, is it reliable enough to rely on it to run my system?

I've got three versions on 3 systems running fine.

People I tell not to use it are home built systems...factory built ones have more stable and known configurations...if all your parts are mainstream...you won't(shouldn't) have issues...

Windows vista is stupid. From what I see, it's just a fancier looking windows XP that eats up even more of your computer's resources.

I don't think it's stupid. It may not look or act any different than XP, but it is 64 bit compatible. That is also the biggest problem users have with Vista. Make sure you have ALL of the drivers for your system. Make sure that they are 64 bit compatible, and you should be fine.

I'm not even going to waste my time with this OS until a year after its been it, I know MS will release 10303274 service packs and patches within that time, so I will wait.

I am running vista beta 2 on a homebuild AMD 2600+ Athlon XP Thunderbird with 512 ram and a 9600XT. Runs fine just uses about 400mb of ram just to idle. :-\ Haven't found any severe bugs so far, no crashes or BSoDs. Oh and that factory built statement is bullshit. I've had more problems with factory built machines than I have ever had with my homebuilt stuff.

400MB RAM just to idle? That really seems like alot to me. I don't think I am going to bother with a new OS either until I get around to building a new computer.

If you have an older P4 processor you better think twice before switching to vista.

I'm trying to get it going on a Virtual Machine, but I think my ISO didn't download properly :/

Try VMWare, that way you don't run any risk.

my winxp uses 330mb idling, so it does not seem that big a jump to me..

afaik the beta expires about 2 months after vista is due to be released, and after this only the core os will work, most applications and such won't work until you buy a licence key. probably like winXP safe mode but with less functionality...

People are already working on cracking that.

Let me just say that is probably the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time.

If you downloaded it, why wouldn't you take the extra step to actually install it? I know it's not a small file, so why?

Now you choose not to install it? What does you not planning to buy it have anything to do with trying the BETA? You test drive cars even though you're never going to get them, so what's the difference here? Besides the install and uninstall, but you could always find the BETA useful and continue to use it. It's not like you have to uninstall it 5 hours later...

I've had a copy of it for maybe 6 months and have not even begun to round up drivers for it. The more I looked into it, the less reason I found to install it. If I understand things correctly, the advantage to Vista is it's capability of utilizing up to a terabyte of ram. I think that is 16 megabytes, not sure. It's way more than I have.

If you do want to install it for a trial version. I would suggest partitioning your hard drive into 3 sections. Install your current OS first, then Vista second. Vista should recognize your current OS (not the other way around). Then you will have 2 working OS to select from on boot up. When Vista expires you will not be scrambling to get your PC in order.
