Senate overwhelmingly approves energy bill.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/29/energy.bill.ap/index. html

I'm not sure whether I should support this new legislature or not. While it has good measures, like boosting ethanol-based gasoline (made from corn), I really see through them to the bad measures. Like giving money to oil companies. How exactly is that going to help us? Yes, they will be able to drill in more places and hence gain more oil, but they will still charge us an arm and a leg, which just means more profit for them. Another thing I don't like is the tax-breaks for those that purchase hybrid-vehicles. I don't have anything against hybrids or people that drive them, but since the current hybrid market involves mostly overseas manufacturers, how is buying hybrids supposed to help the American economy? I live very near Detroit, so cars have always been a part of my life. How are the Big 3 going to handle a boost in hybrids if they have very few to offer themselves?

And I sure am glad they fixed daylight savings time! Sarcasm

Though, simply to make an arguement, the American automotive inducstry did that to themselves. While the overseas companies were putting time into developing hybrids, the American companies were trying to figure out how to put in a television.

People figure if they help the oil industry enough, they'll just get tired of money. Big Grin

The big 3 aren't doing so bad in regards to hybrids. Chevy has unveiled a hybrid of the Chevy Silverado. That is a very cool step. Full Size Pickup Truck Hybrid. You won't see that from Honda, possibly because they don't have a Full Size Pickup Truck but, still it's quite a feat.

It would be an even bigger feat if all the people who didn't need SUVs and pickup trucks stopped buying them.

who's determination of "need" are we supposed to be bowing to, environmentalists? Your opinion of need may be completely different from mine.

Need is probably based upon what the government thinks should be done in order to "protect" the environment, which means influence galore.

I agree with warranto, the American car industry has been pretty stupid when it comes to developing luxury instead of practical things. Who the hell can afford TVs in cars anyways? Certainly not middle class America.

I have seen a full size truck up-close from Ford that runs on gasoline and natural gas (propane). But this was almost 4 years ago and I still have yet to see any mass marketing attempts to produce it.

Well, If you have a wife and one kid, and never drive into the wilderness etc, don't get a gas-guzzling SUV or truck.

If you work in construction or have a large family, then get a truck/SUV.

There's no "bowing" to environmentalists here... people just need to use common sense when buying a car.

Well, what's yours?

And, you know, the U.S. throws away money at such incredible speed compared to the rest of the world on gasoline that if we, say doubled fuel efficieny, even this crappy economy we have now would skyrocket.

Just because you do not need something does not mean that you ought to be blocked from buying it by the government.

I would not mind a hybrid version of my Jeep- if it weren't for the fact that it is harder to obtain parts for them and they are thus harder to maintain. However, that will become less and less of a problem over time. Maybe by the time the Jeep needs replacing there will be a small hybrid SUV of similar design out that suits my needs.

It is good that auto manufacturers are coming up with new and more varied hybrid designs. That's a big step towards mass market appeal.
