Why not ask the guy at the record store. Does anyone remember the song that came out proir to the television? You know, "T.V killed the radio star".

Why? He's not going to know what I like. I know the bands and everything, but I just can't remember 3000+ songs. And I know damn well that the record dude isn't going to know many more than I do. It's not a question of what I like or who I like, but the remembering of my favorite songs by seeing the name.

I think you mean "Video Killed the Radio Star," by the Buggles. Its claim to fame is that it was the first video ever shown on MTV, back in 1981.

Be sure to check out Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Eagles, Iron Maiden, and too many to name.
Metallica and Iron Maiden were very influencial to metal during the '80s. Metallica pushed metal mainstream in the US, while Iron Maiden did the same in the UK.
You might also want to check out the big 4 thrashers of the 80s, known commonly as Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. They provided a very important step in the development of thrash metal. Be sure to check out "Master of Puppets", "Ride the Lightning", and "Orion" by Metallica. I don't know too much about Megadeth so I can't comment on that. "Room for One More" and "I'm the Man" are pretty catchy songs by Anthrax. "Raining Blood", "South of Heaven" and "Angel of Death" and also must-haves from Slayer.
Led Zeppelin were extremely influencial in the '70s. They helped make Rock N' Roll heavy. They were probably the first to try anything even remotely like metal. Needless to say, this caused a chain reactions throughout the times. Some catchy tunes include "Communication Breakdown", "Whole Lotta Love", "Since I've been loving you", "Black Dog", "Misty Mountain Hop", and of course, the epic and beautiful "Stairway to Heaven".
Pink Floyd were another influence in the '70s, this time on Progressive rock. They had many concept albums. In a way, they were very experimental - having long songs that carried onto each other, and telling stories through a whole album - although this maybe a bit more common nowadays, it was a very experimental thing back then. Pink Floyd's offspring included bands such as Genesis, Yes, and expanding to the Progressive Metal genre, Rush, Symphony X, Dream Theater and many more. Pink Floyd songs that are good for beginners include "Comfortably Numb", "Time", and "The Great Gig in the Sky".
I guess that gives a basic coverage. Of course, there are much more bands worth exploring.

May I add some more?
for slayer, You should check their very first albums, Like "show no mercy" , "hell awaits" and thier old limited edition album "Haunting the chapel". It's old, but very technical.
And check out Black Sabbath, that band was a revolution in the hardrock/metal genre. Black sabbath was the beginning of Heavy metal. A very famous song from them, "paranoid". Metallica has songs based on black sabbath. metallica-the memory remains.
Iron maiden is very classic rock, well, not really rock though. It is more Rock & roll. Altrough iron maiden changes trough the time. After they kicked paul di'anno out the band. It was a great succes though, When Bruce dickinson joined the band as singer, Iron maiden became more and more succesfull. The number of the beast was a very great album released in 1983. since that time iron maiden changed trough the years. But infact, ALL the iron maiden songs are the same. I play bass guitar and a big iron maiden fan, I can play many iron maiden songs, But infact, The basic structure of all maiden songs are the same. On every album.
You should also check "kreator". great Death trash band from germany. They have good songs like Extreme agressions and Coma of souls.
Anyone in for Death metal?
In 1989, Cannibal corpse released their first demo, "Cannibal Corpse demo"
It is one of the most famous death metal bands I think, Also morbid angel.
But death metal is a different story, So I better STFU.
O yeah, And don't forget AC/DC.
Ohh, and Judas priest and allice Cooper.

I'm all over in what I like. I like Aerosmith, Queen, Black Sabbath, Steve Miller Band, Bob Seger and Silverbullet Band, Eric Clapton (Cream), Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Eagles, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Journey, Twisted Sister, Styx, Tom Petty, Ted Nugent, Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Blue Oyster Cult, and Pink Floyd.
Those are my main groups I listen to. The ones bolded are the most listened to.
Right now my collection is small, but it is consistantly growing, and rapidly.

Alright, a bit more on the 90s.
In the early 90s, Grunge (sp) and Alternate were rather popular genres. It was, in a way, the end of "guitar wankery" in the mainstream - flashy soloings with blazing speeds took a backseat. Grunge bands that were very popular included Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. These bands, especially Nirvana, have a very major influence on music today.
And of course, there was Pearl Jam, as previously mentioned.
Alternative is not really my area, however, early Radiohead was Alternative - Pablo Honey, Radiohead's debut is a good example of Alternative. Of course, Radiohead is no longer Alternative, and with their diversity in styles they've become pretty unclassifiable.
Metal continues raging past the 80s and into the 90s. A group called Rage Against the Machine brought rap-rock into the mainstream. Although they were not the first to do it (Anthrax did it in the 80s already), they certainly gave a lot more mainstream exposure to the rap-rock genre compared to other bands. Their offspring, unfortunately, aren't all that good. Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D., can be all said to be influenced by RATM in one way or another.
Dream Theater, although releasing their first album in 1989, made a mark from 1992 with the album "Images and Words". Progressive metal was made popular, continuing Rush's work. Other similar bands like Symphony X (as mentioned in my above post) also followed this style. Bands like Tool, are also slowling evolving and showing influences of Prog.
Death Metal has also evolved. Bands like In Flames and At the Gates, from Gothenburg, Sweden, populated death metal and recieved international success. Following them were many more bands from Gothenburg and around the world with heavy influences. The "cookie-monster" vocals are debated a lot - they are heavy and aggressive to some, but mindless and ugly to others.
Thrash pretty much went into hibernation in the 90s, due to lack of bands putting out lack of material. However, there might be a change in tide, as Kreator are putting out a new album soon.
I can't really think of much to say on the 80s. You should check out the following albums:
